Seems ludicrous doesn’t it? However, if you take a moment to examine the path humankind has taken over the past millennium you’ll quickly realize the headline’s poignancy. It seems to me that when there are enough resources to support the global populous it should be a criminal (and in fact punishable) offence to restrict those resources based on profitability. If you were walking down the street and there was an indigent child who had a loaf of bread in their hands, wouldn’t it be wrong to steal that bread when you have a pantry full of food at home? Of course it would be wrong, but this is precisely what happens worldwide on a daily basis. We humans have reached a point technologically that we can easily use existing resources in ways that will support the entire population of the planet, yet we don’t. Why is that?
In order to come to believe that you deserve more than someone else you have to believe that you are “better” than they are. You can NEVER be better than another human being, only better than you used to be. That of course is not a commonly held opinion but it is one of my fundamental beliefs. This belief has constantly led me to try to become a better person. By “a better person” I mean more compassionate, more considerate, more tolerant. These traits are of course in direct conflict with increasing personal wealth as the right decision is seldom, if ever, the profitable one
In an ideal world where humans had progressed beyond greed and gluttony Capitalism would indeed work perfectly. Unfortunately we have not only failed to make an effort to rid ourselves of these character flaws, we have embraced them. It is deeply disturbing that there are solutions to all of the severe challenges humanity faces yet we consistently dismiss them. The global economy is on the brink of failure and it is my opinion that it should fail. Why should individuals whose work and efforts produce no product or service (the financial sector) be rewarded at the expense of the majority of the population? They shouldn’t. While this behavior seems criminal to me, it is what we have brought ourselves to be. We, as a species, have become nothing more than a virus, nothing better than a parasite. At our current pace the host will die and take every last one of us with it. Perhaps that is just as it should be.
